We have a long-standing commitment to the North of England and Wales, grounded in the belief that world-leading research must also deliver regional benefit, resilience and opportunity.

Our University’s strategy is From Manchester for the World. At the Dalton Nuclear Institute, we are playing our part in making an impact far beyond the confines of our own campus by connecting nuclear expertise, facilities and partnerships across Manchester, Cumbria, the wider North West and Wales.

A regional role in the UK nuclear ecosystem

Our work places The University of Manchester at the heart of the UK’s nuclear ecosystem, contributing directly to regional growth, skills development and regeneration across Manchester, Cumbria and the wider North West.

Through sustained partnerships with industry, government and regional universities, we support innovation, workforce development and long-term social and economic value.

Long-term commitment to Cumbria

For more than a decade, we have maintained a strong presence in Cumbria, a region central to the UK’s nuclear mission.

Through nationally significant facilities such as the Dalton Cumbrian Facility and our leadership role within the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Collaboration (RAICo) in Whitehaven, we enable collaboration between academia and industry, accelerate innovation and support the development of the future nuclear workforce.

Trusted partnerships with organisations including the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Sellafield Ltd, UKNNL and UKAEA reflect both the depth of our expertise and the confidence placed in our role as a regional partner.

Delivering Manchester 2035

Our regional activity brings together global excellence and local responsibility, ensuring that reputation and regional impact progress together.

The University of Manchester’s 2035 Strategy, From Manchester for the World, sets a clear ambition: to combine global excellence with local responsibility. Our work is a key pillar in delivering this strategy.

Our regional activity reflects Manchester 2035’s core commitments to:

  • Place – investing in regions critical to the UK’s future energy and security needs
  • People – developing skills pipelines from postgraduate training to industrial leadership
  • Partnerships – working collaboratively across sectors, institutions and regions
  • Innovation – translating research into real‑world impact
  • Social responsibility and sustainability – supporting long‑term, inclusive regional growth.

By anchoring Manchester’s nuclear research strength across the North West, including Wales, and engaging closely with civic leaders and regeneration initiatives - such as the Whitehaven Regeneration Master Plan - we are moving toward a place‑based, collaborative model with lasting social and economic value. Our work ensures that global reputation and regional impact progress together - not in tension, but in tandem.

As the UK navigates towards delivering net zero, energy security and technological change, we will continue to invest in partnerships, people and place, ensuring regional impact and global reputation advance together.
