Our researchers are working to better understand the effects of radiation on the body and our health.
Radiation is used to treat roughly 50% of tumour mass in clinical cancer care. A fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical effects it induces in biological systems is key to designing improved radiation therapy treatment.
Biological samples can be irradiated with photons, protons and heavier ions at our Dalton Cumbrian Facility, allowing researchers to compare DNA damage or cell killing induced by different types of radiation and build a better picture of their relative effectiveness.
Researchers also can perform multiscale simulations, drawing from nanoscale description of damage to DNA to predict effects at the whole-patient level.
