A typical day looks like ...
My role is about keeping people connected, removing obstacles, and helping complex engineering projects move forward
A typical day for Tom involves a balance of planning, problem-solving and keeping people connected. No two days are exactly the same, but communication is always at the heart of his work.
He spends his time clarifying priorities, coordinating teams, removing obstacles that could slow progress, and making sure clients and stakeholders have clear visibility of the project.
Whether discussing next steps, tracking progress or translating technical detail into something easier to understand, Tom’s focus is on keeping everyone aligned and helping projects move forward successfully.
My favourite thing about my role is ...
What I enjoy most is knowing that my work contributes, as part of a wider effort, to the transition to net zero.
Nuclear energy will be essential, alongside renewables, for achieving net zero by 2050. To make this possible, nuclear power generation needs to be as efficient as possible, whether that energy comes from legacy reactors or the next generation of nuclear technologies.
I also enjoy the nature of the consultancy side of the work, as it brings a big problem-solving element and gives me the opportunity to work on a variety of challenges. More broadly, I like working in an industry with such a rich history, while still having huge potential to develop further.
The nuclear sector is constantly evolving and being part of a field that is both shaped by innovation and helps to drive it is something I find especially exciting.
Stay curious and keep asking questions — the conversations you have now can help shape where your career goes next.
My advice to students interested in a future in the nuclear sector...
I’d encourage students to engage with their lecturers and have open discussions, as this can challenge your thinking and strengthen your ideas.
For anyone considering a career in the nuclear sector, my advice is to stay curious and explore the areas that interest you most.
